Philip D. Harnden - Principal, CCHPO

Phil Harnden is currently the President of the Saratoga Center for High-Performance Organizations, Inc., one of the Commonwealth Centers for High-Performance (CCHPO). CCHPO is a management consulting network focused on improving organizational performance and managing large scale organizational change in the public and private sectors. Areas of consulting emphasis for the Centers are large-scale organizational change, development of high-performance executive leadership teams, project management, executive coaching, emotional competence, values and ethics, organizational diagnosis and work culture surveys, integration of the continuous learning and improvement philosophy into organizational work cultures, design and implementation of product quality and service quality programs, and design and delivery of executive development programs.

Dr. Harnden is a primary presenter and facilitator for the Building High-Performance Organizations for the Twenty-First Century Seminar, for the Continuous Learning and Improvement Process Workshop, for the CCHPO Project Management Curriculum, and for the Organizational Diagnostic Change Model and change process. Dr. Harnden is an adjunct faculty member at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Executive Institute for senior federal executive and for the Executive MBA Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

Before joining CCHPO and founding the Saratoga Center for High-Performance Organizations, Dr. Harnden spent twenty-three years in increasingly responsible positions with the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL), including:

  • KAPL Laboratory Organizational Effectiveness Advisor, 1991 - 2000 Lead Trainer for KAPL management, team training, Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and Zenger-Miller's Team Leadership. Lead KAPL implementation of transformational models for organizational change, such as Covey's Principle Centered Leadership and High-Performance Organizations. Control budget and design for KAPL training programs. • Obtained Meyers-Briggs and Kirton KAI certification and integrated material into KAPL workshops. • Brought Managerial Assessment of Proficiency in-house and utilized with all top level mangers. Conducted workshops in Kepner-Tregoe Problem Solving, Creative Problem Solving, Team Effectiveness, Effective Presentation and Listening, Cultural Diversity, Process Reviews (Total Quality Management), Train-the-Trainer, and Technical Writing. • Directed training activities at KAPL for navy and civilian personnel, including instructor certifications, student qualifications, supervisory development and all supporting operations.
  • KAPL Prototype Plant Manager, 1989 - 1991 • Led the safe operation and maintenance of one of four nuclear powered training prototypes with three hundred operators qualifying eight hundred students per year with an operating budget of over twenty million dollars per year. • Initiated significant Continuous Improvement activities resulting in marked improvements in operating conditions for a thirty-year old plant. • Created and implemented leadership training programs for all levels of the operating plant with resulting improved operating margins. Dr. Harnden has personally conducted numerous strategic planning efforts, team development activities, project management sessions, and individual skills workshops. Among a variety of tools, he is certified to administer and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Human Synergistics Instruments, Prosci Change Management tools, the Leadership Philosophy Questionnaire, and the Lominger Leadership Architect Suite, including the Voices 360 degree feedback instrument. He uses these with his varied skills to assess leadership style, improve teamwork and team skills, and enhance group problem-solving.
